Egerton University is the oldest institution of higher learning in Kenya. It was founded as a Farm School in 1939 by Lord Maurice Egerton of Tatton, a British national who settled in Kenya in the 1920s. It is established through the Universities Act No. 42 of 2012. Egerton University has partnered with Michigan State University (MSU), United States International University-Africa (USIU), National Cooperative Business Association CLUSA International (NCBA CLUSA) and the National Youth Bunge Association (NYBA) to implement the USAID Empowered Youth Program. This is a 5-year program that will be implemented by CoELIB at Egerton University. CoELIB builds on existing knowledge and capacity to foster innovation and business-oriented actions and recognizes that a collection of individuals, assets and other resources do not yet constitute a potent organization that can make an impact on livelihoods. Therefore, they harness capabilities into a sustainable organizational form that can contribute to the well-being of people for inclusive socio-economic development.


The Program aims to connect youth through social and economic opportunities. The program builds on existing evidence of youth social and economic challenges and opportunities from previous, and current USAID investments; key stakeholder engagement, including Kenyan youth and youth-serving organizations. MSU, EGU, USIU, NCBA CLUSA, and NYBA present a sustainable model of youth empowerment to achieve the Program goal. The USAID Empowered Youth Program will use a macro-level approach to strengthen the capacity of youth-serving systems and HEIs to support youth empowerment initiatives.


The Communications and Media Associate will work with the Communications & Media Officer and all the other offices within the Program at MSU, USIU-Africa, and NCBA- CLUSA and NYBA to attain efficiency in running the Program in improving the Program’s reach and engagement while focusing on driving qualified leads. He/she will assist in developing, implementing, and monitoring the Program’s strategies of communication, outreach, and its activities. With the guidance of the Communications & Media Officer, he/she will be responsible for ensuring that communication outputs and targets are met as per the program’s framework. They should also ensure that media activities are carried out as expected, within budgetary and time limits. In particular, the incumbent will perform the following tasks.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Assist in developing, coordinating and implementing the communications strategy of the Program, and undertake the regular updates of the Program’s main communication tools (e.g. website; newsletters; press releases; speeches in English.
  • Help in monitoring and measuring the impact of the communication strategy and make adjustments accordingly
  • Support the design, coordination and implementation of effective communication campaigns around activities and events of the Program and donor visits. This includes: proposing and designing original communication concepts and tools, drafting outreach plans, social media, online engagement with participants, coordinating with communication teams of partners, following up with donors in the aftermath of the events;
  • Draft, edit and post compelling and engaging content for corporate social media platforms Program website, Twitter, Facebook, Instagram and LinkedIn (communication copy e.g press release, publications)
  • Assist in maintaining web content and executing social media strategies.
  • Propose and produce communication tools for specific activities of the Program.
  • Track programs and media exposure.
  • Perform any other relevant duties assigned to her/him by management or by the Communications & Media Officer.

  • Content for the types of communication materials that will be required at the end of successful projects
  • Branding & Marking (B&M) Plan developed
  • High quality media coverage attained
